Lilacs? They’re [Bloomin’] Edible.

For those who might mistakenly believe that lilacs are only decorative, one word: Bull! And we have the Happy Birthday Taurus Lilac Martini to prove it. (Okay, not technically a punch, but who would go to the trouble of making just ONE of these?)

Fresh Lilac Martini [Happy Birthday Taurus]
1 part lilac syrup*
1 part vodka (feel free to use 2 oz vodka, but it will dilute the scent)
1 part fresh squeezed lemon

Shake over ice, strain into the prettiest glass you can find, and garnish with a lilac sprig. Cheers!

*Lilac Syrup
Equal parts lilac florets, water, and sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes. Strain, and chill.

Put Some Punch in that Graduation

On Monday, the world will welcome the newly graduated 2012 class of Fighting Squirrels from Mary Baldwin College, duly inspired to high endeavor. But can they do it without a Mary Baldwin punch bowl, hand-crafted in America by a Mary Baldwin alumna? Whoever would even dare make them TRY?

The bowl comes with ten yellow punch cups hand-carved into tulip blossoms (cups may also be ordered separately for $25 each). Visit bowlsofArt.com for more info on this and another Squirrel-inspired punch bowl set that your graduate will go nuts over.

The Naked Truth

Tempted as we are to bare our souls about World Naked Gardening Day, it’s probably more prudent to concentrate on the after party. And any punch recipe that calls for ‘ripped mint leaves’ certainly, uh, peeks our interest…

Garden Party Punch (fills a 10 litre punch bowl)
3 750ml bottles of 42 Below feijoa vodka
750mls fresh squeezed lemon juice
1.5 liters elderflower cordial
1.5 liters of cloudy apple juice
1.5 liters of ginger beer

From the original recipe writer: “The sober among you will know that only makes 7.5 liters. I’d suggest filling up 2 liters of that available space with a giant ice cube, done in layers with fruit or a fresh (non poisonous) flower. The remaining space should accommodate at least a cucumber’s worth of thin slices; the adventurous among you could cut stars or other event-relevant shapes. A good handful of ripped mint leaves will finish things off wonderfully. Stir frequently and sip wisely.”

All Aboard for National Train Day!

Luxury got some serious traction in 1902, when The 20th Century Limited first rolled out on its maiden trip between New York and Chicago. A crimson carpet welcomed passengers onto the train, introducing “red carpet treatment” to the world of travel.
Wonder if the whistle stops along the way stepped up in terms of refreshments?

Red Carpet Punch
2 quarts cranberry juice cocktail
1 (6 oz.) can frozen limeade concentrate
1 limeade can light rum

Combine all ingredients. Serve in punch bowl over ice. May omit rum and add one quart ginger ale for a non-alcoholic punch.

In Concert with Wild Imaginations

In a PBS interview, Maurice Sendak apparently once said that “…. I know that if there’s a purpose for life, it was for me to hear Mozart.” With all due respect, Mr. Sendak, we believe your purpose was to bring to life the imaginations of children, young and old, in that forever-cherished place, where the wild things are.

Imagination Punch
Ice cubes:
18 disposable plastic cups (3 ounces)
18 maraschino cherries
36 fresh blueberries
1-1/2 cups cold distilled water, divided

Punch:
2 packages (3 ounces each) berry blue gelatin
2 cups boiling water
4 cups cold water
2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice
1 can (12 ounces) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
2 liters ginger ale, chilled

Place plastic cups in muffin pans. From each cherry, cut out a mouth shape; pat dry. Place one cherry mouth and two blueberries for eyes in the bottom of each cup. Pour one teaspoon distilled water into each cup. Freeze for 30 minutes or until solid.

Pour one tablespoon distilled water into each cup. Return to freezer; freeze for three hours or until solid.

For punch, in a large bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in cold water, pineapple juice and lemonade concentrate. Refrigerate for 1-1/2 hours or until chilled.
Just before serving, transfer to a five-quart punch bowl. Stir in ginger ale. Remove ice cubes from cups; place face side up in punch bowl. Makes 18 servings (about one gallon).
